Conversations with the Universe: Blind Faith in Authority

The girl sits on the ruins of a miniature city, symbolically free from authority worship.

The Little One sat on a cold stone wall in the middle of the night-time city. She was not alone, even though the friend she spent her time with was not visible in this world. She sighed deeply and looked up at the sky. “Hello, Universe. What is happening to me? I keep finding myself questioning the structures of society and the ways limits are placed on our freedom that do not truly need to exist. It makes me angry. Could we talk about faith in authority?”

The Universe placed a part of itself on the stone wall in silence and then answered quietly but steadily. “I too feel, Little One, the restlessness growing inside you and the longing for a different way of life. It is good that you asked. When you begin to question the structures around you, you notice that you are stepping out of the shoes society has put on you since childhood. This is a sign that you are moving toward your own path.”

The Little One chuckled with quiet satisfaction and lowered her gaze to her shoes. “What exactly is faith in authority?” she asked thoughtfully.

The Universe radiated, and its smile reached across the galaxies. “Faith in authority is an old phenomenon that goes back to the very beginnings of human history. Humans have always sought order and safety in the midst of chaos, and authorities have been one way to achieve a sense of security. From childhood we are taught to trust those who are in a position to decide for us: parents, teachers, leaders. But when you begin to question these structures, you notice that they are not always genuine or necessary. They are power structures that often maintain control and order, yet do not always serve true well-being and individuality.”

“What do you feel, Little One, when you look at these structures? How does it feel to consider that many of the rules we follow, even without noticing, may not truly arise from within us?” the Universe asked.

The Little One thought for a moment. “I feel that life itself is already challenging, and society seems to make it even more challenging with its rules. Especially when it comes to financial survival, I feel we are gladly tied in place unless we immediately find the right job or a clear path. Instead of being able to freely try different things, make mistakes and perhaps eventually succeed, the locked systems of society make this risky. It is easier and safer to stay put and live supported by society, because poverty and passivity are rewarded just enough to give you a roof over your head and food to eat. But when you try to improve your situation by starting your own business, relying on your own dreams and growth can mean you may lose everything, including the small safety you had. For some reason society feels that a person who has deteriorated within the system should not be given power over their own success and should not try. It is convenient that they remain there, obedient, stripped of power and of their own grip on life. I can only guess what motivates society to do this.”

The Universe leaned closer and spoke gently, yet its words carried weight. “You are absolutely right, Little One. Society has created structures in which economic uncertainty feels frightening and taking risks feels dangerous, even though those very risks and failures often lead to real growth and success. Systems that were originally designed for protection have turned into chains that keep people in place.”

“When you speak of poverty and how it has been made safe yet immobilizing, you see clearly how society offers just enough support that a person does not completely sink. This safety becomes a trap that prevents an individual from stepping out, testing their wings and seeking freedom on their own terms. Success, whether financial or spiritual, often requires the courage to face the unknown, yet society’s systems are built to keep us within boundaries where risks are manageable and predictable.”

“Behind these structures there is a complex web in which economic power and control are intertwined. It is easier to govern citizens who do not take risks and remain obedient, without independence and without decision-making power over their own lives. Society can benefit from people succeeding, but only within certain limits. When an individual rises on their own terms, it threatens the system’s stable balance and its way of distributing power. This is a method of maintaining the status quo.”

The Universe lingered in silence for a moment and continued. “But you do not have to remain a prisoner of these boundaries, Little One. Remember that even though society may try to set limits, you have the power to shape your own way and create your own opportunities. It comes down to whether you dare to step past the fears and systems that were built to keep you from seeing your own potential. Many have stepped beyond these constraints and found something great, not because they had less fear, but because they understood that freedom and growth are worth the risk.”

The Little One nodded slowly, though her expression remained serious. “Understanding all of this feels like a prison. How can one grow out of a culture and society like this, when it’s sprouting in every corner of the world and you're forced into it? You can’t live year-round in a house that’s off the electrical grid. You pay a television tax from your paycheck, even though you don’t even own a TV. You’re forced into systems from which others benefit by getting rich, and you can’t escape them. No rational person could submit to this after realizing that it’s all about belief in authority.”

The Universe nodded with understanding. “Your understanding of how the system has wrapped itself around you can feel like an invisible prison. This is part of why many remain obediently in place, because it is easier to live within the safety nets of the system than to question why they exist. But you see through it, and it frustrates you. Many before you have felt the same. As you said, many systems are built to serve those who benefit from them, and they often make the search for freedom difficult, if not impossible. Yet even if this culture seems to prevail everywhere, true freedom is born from recognizing where you can influence things, even on a small scale.”

“The faith in authority you mention is essentially a way to govern people’s lives and decisions, but growing beyond it begins by questioning its power. When you realize that you can make your own choices and create your own ways of living, even as systems try to bind you, you have already begun the process of liberation. Although you cannot fully escape all systems, you can decide how you allow them to affect you. Freedom is a state of mind, and creative souls like you are often the ones who break these constraints through their actions and ideas.”

“Every creative act, every small rebellion you make in your own life, is a quiet protest against the systems that try to keep you from finding your own path. You do not have to fight the systems head-on. Every step toward self-discovery and independence is a step away from their shackles. This can mean seeking alternative ways of living, forming connections with like-minded people, or simply continuing to grow and learn even when the surrounding world tries to suppress it.”

The Little One sighed deeply and looked up at the sky. “I do not know my way, dear Universe. I make these tarot cards because I feel an inner compulsion, and I am trying to find the golden middle way with my creativity so I do not explode. It troubles me that society is not interested in the individual. Society is not a friend, and yet I must serve its endless, hungry need. It feels like slavery.”

The Universe looked at the Little One in silence, letting the words sink deep. “I understand you, Little One. Society is impersonal, and many never think about this. Those who never fall between its gears do not even see or understand its mechanisms. Society may not be a true friend that cares, but you have something far more powerful: your own soul, your creativity and your ability to find a way out of these structures.”

“A protective society does not recognize the individual. It is like a machine that maintains its own order, and that order is priority number one. Individuality disappears between its cogs. For the individual this experience can break trust in life, yet it is also an eye-opener. It reveals that true support and safety often come from somewhere deeper, which our independence-focused society does not acknowledge: from within yourself and from the connections you create with the people and the world around you, not necessarily from society’s structures. It is in society’s interest that a person is alone and feels separate. Such a person does not rebel, does not form groups and considers their possibilities for influence to be very small.”

“Even if you cannot yet see the whole path, it opens step by step. Sometimes the very moments when you feel suspended over nothing are the ones in which you truly begin to listen to yourself and see the possibility of a new path. So do not worry, Little One. You do not have to see the whole path right now. Your creativity and your soul guide you forward, even if the world seems indifferent. Your journey is full of warmth and feeling. Even if society is not always on your side, you always have a friend in the universe and in those who truly understand you.”

The Little One shivered. “I understand. But Universe, how could I help other people see these power structures to which they seem blind? It troubles me that so many live by these rules without ever questioning them, and they try to force back those who step away. How could I help them wake up to the fact that in the game we call life we are our own pieces and winners, not the property of a large, faceless system?”

The Universe raised its hand over its expanse. “There is your challenge, Little One, to awaken people to see the structures that hold them in place. Many do not even realize they are imprisoned, because power structures are subtle and often disguise themselves as normality. Those who have grown up within these rules consider them natural and therefore do not question them. And because the purpose of your soul’s journey is that you, Little One, grow in your divinity, one of your most important lessons is to understand your own potential. Sheep do not build castles and they do not question, do they?”

The Little One listened intently, and the Universe went on. “The first step is to awaken yourself. You have already crossed that threshold when you begin to see the lies and illusions around you. Your own journey and your experiences are an example to others. You cannot force anyone to see what you see, but you can be a light that shows an alternative. Every tarot card, every symbol and every conversation you share opens a door for those who are ready to step through. Sometimes a quiet realization arises at the very moment one least expects it.”

“Remember, Little One, that awakening is a process, and not everyone is ready for it at the same time. Yet every seed you sow can grow when the time is right. You do not have to change the whole world at once. It is enough to be honest with yourself and let your own light shine. Those who are ready to see, will see. And sometimes one seeing eye can light the way for many.”

The Little One was silent for a moment and then asked cautiously, “Universe, is it right to break one’s faith in authority? We have been taught that lying and stealing are wrong and that society is owed the lion’s share of our achievements. But what if one must steal to eat, or lie to keep a job?”

The Universe sighed deeply and answered. “This is a profound and difficult question, Little One. Society teaches us clear rules about what is right and wrong, yet these rules do not always take into account an individual’s situation or the injustice they may face.”

“Stealing and lying break trust and respect, but what about when a person is hungry or when a job is the only means of survival? Is breaking the rules in that case actually a fight for justice, Little One?”

The Little One nodded slowly, and the Universe concluded. “The core of humanity and morality is sometimes more complex than black-and-white rules suggest. At times it may be necessary to break rules created by authority in order to preserve one’s own humanity and dignity. You must listen to your heart, Little One, and decide what feels right.”
